Since a lot of people asked me recently about my favourite VST PlugIns, I decided to make list on my website (a lot easier than mailing them again and again :-)
So here's a list of my favourite Freeware VST Plugin Effects I use in my productions.
You'll also find a list of my favourite Freeware VST Instruments in the top menu (More...)

When I started PC based recording in 2001, it was very hard to find good freeware plugins that could compete with the big names like Waves etc.
Well, now, ten years later, things have changed a bit  - you can download tons of free VSTs and spend your whole day testing them (and many of us do, and still haven't recorded that new song ;-)
There are lots of great freebies out there for almost any, well, no, I think for ANY purpose. Today you can make a professional music production solely with free plugins and many of them are frequently used in hit productions of the big studios.
Consider this a little guide through the plugin - jungle.
I have no affiliation to any of the listed developers. It's only intended to spread the word and as a little gesture of gratitude for their work.
I hope you will find this useful and give those wonderful plugins a try. They really are a great alternative to many expensive commercial plugins. Please visit the author's pages and consider donating a small amount to these outstanding developers, especially if you end up using these plugins commercially.

My Favourite Free VST FX Plugins:

Compressor:

My favourite Compressors.
  • Antress Modern FX Lost Angel:
Picture
I used this one for example on the lead guitar of "Magnificent Skies"
It is very easy to use and works wonders on lead instruments or vocals.

Reverb:

  • TAL Reverb 2
Picture
I really like it on piano sounds. It can make a simple small Soundfont piano sound "more expensive".
I use it if I want the reverb to be part of the sound, for colouring, like in "Grace" on the piano:

  • Variety Of Sound - EpicVerb
Picture
Wonderful reverb. Comes with many good presets. Works for ambiences for drums or to embed instruments into deep long reverbs.Best free reverb for my taste, when it comes to quality in relation to CPU usage. Very CPU friendly.
The piano on "Magnificent Skies" is embedded into this reverb and it really sounds like far away in the background, yet still distinct and clearly locatable.

Delay

  • TAL Dub Delay
Picture
Dub Heaven. The Tal Dub is my frequent choice on solo guitar or pianos. A must have!
  • Variety Of Sound - Nasty DLA
Picture
Great on acoustic guitars. Fatten up a solo guitar or produce a nice stereo image of a acoustic rhythm guitar.

EQ

  • J1000 PQ33
Picture
My favourite mastering EQ and "Secret Weapon" - Can work wonders on a dull mix. Great presets to make the mix sound a little more "expensive".
